              Brief Introduction of Disciplines in Institute of Life Sciences
 
Currently Institute of Life Sciences has been authorized to confer M.S. degree in discipline in Biology, which includes 5 secondary disciplines as follows:
 
1、Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
    At present, there are 6 professors, 5 associate professors. Research in this discipline is in five major directions:
(1)Gene function and Proteomics
(2)Pathogenesis and control of pathogenic micro-organisms
(3)Genetic engineering and Protein engineering
(4)Molecular biology and transgenic crop
(5)Human disease and metabolic regulation of gene expression
 
2、Cell Biology
   At present, there are 4 professors, 2 associate professors, 1 visiting professor and 1 adjunct professor. Research in this section includes five major directions:
(1)Intracellular material transportation and metabolism
(2)Stem cells and Cell differentiation
(3)DNA replication, damage and repair
(4)Signal transduction and gene regulation
(5)Virus and Cellular immunity
 
3、Genetics
   At present, there are 5 professors, 6 associate professors in this genetics discipline, and five major research areas summarized below:
(1)Molecular genetics, evolution and breeding
(2)Molecular plant-microbe interactions and cross-kingdom signal transduction
(3)Genomics
(4)Medical genetics
(5)Global regulatory networks in prokaryotes
 
4、Microbiology
    At present, there are 2 professors, 6 associate professors. Research in this discipline is in four major directions:
(1)Interactions between Viruses, other pathogenic microbes and their hosts
(2)Molecular Virology
(3)Microbial Resources and Environmental Microbiology
(4)Food Microbiology
 
5、Physiology
    At present, there are 3 professors, 3 associate professors. Research in this discipline is in two major directions:
(1)Cell signaling and regulation
(2)Integrated Physiology
